Frequently Asked Questions
Please see a list of frequently asked questions about dragon boating below.....hopefully it answers everything you want to know!
How fit do I have to be?
To begin dragon boat paddling a moderate level of fitness is required. If you have a desire to do well it will not take long to build what is commonly known as 'paddle fitness'. You may be muscle sore after your first few sessions but if you stick with it you will soon get over this.
Can anyone come paddling?
For insurance and safety reasons paddlers have to be 18 years of age or older.
Is it hard to learn?
Technique and timing are the key to good paddling and many of us are still working to perfect it. It isn't hard to learn and with a supportive team behind you it won't take long to get the hang of it. We also have paddlers' reps whose role is to look after newbys. No one is asked to do more than they can physically manage and new paddlers are actively encouraged to pull their paddle in when they get tired. We also have qualified coaches who will advise you in all aspects of dragon boat racing. The sport is low impact yet very aerobic and is an excellent way to expand your exercise program.
What equipment do I need?
You will get wet! It is a good idea to have a pair of
shoes (eg. Crocs), shorts and t-shirt you don’t mind
getting wet. Paddles are supplied. Training tops will be
supplied as part of your membership if you decide to join.
Racing shirts can be purchased at a cost price.
Is it safe? I’m worried about capsizing…
It is very unlikely that the boat will capsize but if it does it will not sink! However, you should be able to swim 50m.
How often do I have to train?
We have 3 training sessions a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5.45pm and Sunday morning at 8.00am. It is not compulsory to attend all 3 but we encourage paddlers to come along whenever they can. Please note training during the off season (April - August) can vary (e.g. running/ walking, swimming sessions).
Is it social?
Yes!!! We encourage a strong social network as well as a strong competitive spirit. Who says you can't have fun and be number one!! On some Thursday's after training we stay behind for drinks and pizza, a BBQ or go to a restaurant for some well deserved food (and drinks!) and on Sunday morning's we continue the fun over coffee at one of Mandurah's many cafes.
When does the season start?
We start gearing up for the season around October in preparation for the dragon boat regattas commencing in November. There are 5 DBWA regattas throughout the season all held at Champion Lakes in Armadale. We also have other fun regattas during the year beginning with Mandurah's own regatta at Boddington on the first weekend of November. We encourage people to come along and try out at any time throughout the year.
So we've answered all your questions? Well what are you waiting for? Come along to training and see what all the fuss is about. However, if you still have more questions please drop us an email.
